Kalliohovi, Vaasankatu 17, Helsinki, Finland

Apparently this is the cheapest pub in Kallio, which makes it the cheapest
pub in Helsinki. It was quite dark, but full of Wild West paraphernalia.
They do single malt whiskies, but the range of beer is pretty standard, as
is the range of cider. They do food as well. It's much more civilized
than I had expected.

Heinähattu, Vaasankatu 9, Helsinki Very small range of beer (Karhu and one or two others) and only one sort of (Hartwall) cider in this one-room pub, but nonetheless a memorable place with thick layers of posters and album covers on the walls and original Finnish rock music on the speakers. Bowls of what I can't guarantee were almonds on the tables for the mulled wine. The barman has the sort of moustache you see in Bill Tidy cartoons. I would say it reminded me of Aki Kaurismäki, if you had any idea who Aki Kaurismäki was.

Review (in Finnish) from Ylioppilaslehti

Kola, Helsinginkatu 13, Helsinki Much trendier than the other pubs. It was late and I had a cold, so I can't prove that the barmen had fashionable shirts and asymmetric haircuts, but they had jugs of coffee and mulled wine on the hot plates. Lots of comfortable cubes to sit on. Looks as if it used to be a shop. (Fieldwork for all 2004-12-12)
