Completed notes
This page is a stub, and intentionally so.
See Pontus Lurcock's Learning Finnish
page for my notes on the resources I've worked through.
Notes in progress
- Finnish for Translators (Finn Lectura, Helsinki,
2003) has lots of exercises to develop reading and translating of
formal and official Finnish. The other two parts are called "Problem
areas" and "Endings etc."
- Electric Verses
is a collection of contemporary poetry from Finland with translations.
YLE, the Finnish broadcasting corporation, offers on-line courses in
Finnish. I mention two of them below and will report to Pont when I've
done them properly.
- Finsk Grammatik is only
nominally in Swedish. All of the distressingly exacting and technical
exercises are in Finnish apart from Rätta svaren (correct
answers) and Töm fälten (empty fields) at the bottom,
and the Meny (done because we are too meny) at the side.
It is character-building stuff and I will be a better man at the end of
it.
- supisuomea
is aimed at adult learners who have moved to Finland. It's much
cuddlier, with video clips and vocabulary lists in English, French,
German, Russian, Swedish and Somali.
